Time To Fertilize

Spring is here and the best time to fertilize your lawn here in Texas is in spring. You will want to apply fertilizer to your lawn when you see your grass starting to turn green. This tells you that your lawn is coming out of the dormancy stage into the growing stage. If you fertilize your lawn before your grass starts growing, you will waste the fertilizer by feeding any weeds that are in your lawn which will encourage weed growth. Timing is essential.

The type of fertilizer that is best to use in the sping is the fertilizer that is highest in nitrogen. On every fertilizer bag there are three numbers. The first number represents the nitrogen. The higher the first number, the more nitrogen the fertilizer contains. This will help kick start your lawn to become green and healthy.

Always make sure you read the label on the fertilizer to determine the correct amount that your lawn will need. Fertilizers are usually based on 1,000 square foot area. You will need to measure your lawn and select the correct calibration on your spreader in order to spread the correct amount on your lawn. If you use too much you can run the risk of burning your lawn. If you do not use enough, you will not get the best results from your fertilizer.

Make sure you do not apply the fertilizer during a drought or after a substantial amount of rain. After you apply the fertilizer, you will need to apply at least 1" of water within 30 days to activate the fertilizer. If you do not water your lawn after fertilizing, the fertilizer will burn your grass and it will be difficult to correct the mistake.

Fertilizing is a very important step in maintaining or building a healthy lawn. It helps to promote a healthy lawn that will help with weeds and give you satisfying results. Make sure you always read the label before applying anything to your lawn. Apply fertilizer only on lawns that are starting to become green and don't forget to water in the fertilizer to activate it. Happy fertilizing!
